Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England Scenes in English South-West Midlands The Dean Forest Railway line began life as a tramroad in 1810 for transporting coal and iron ore. The Dean Forest Railway line was operated by successive railway companies, including, latterly, British Railways until 1985. The Dean Forest Railway Society started heritage railway operations at Parkend in 1971. The idea was to restore to working condition the last remaining section of the original Severn and Wye Valley railway. The main headquarters is at Norchard, major development starting in 1978, with extensions to Lydney Junction by 1995 and Parked in 2006. *

Just by the station is the outlet drain pipe into the River Lyd, 5000 gallons/20000 litres per minute of water from the old colliery workings between Norchard and Pillowell. The rusty red colour of the Orchard Drain water is from iron compounds in the water as the drainage water leached through ironstone layers.
