The East Lancashire Railway is a twelve mile heritage railway line in North West England, East Lancashire, which runs between Rawtenstall and Heywood with intermediate stations at Bury Bolton Street, Summerseat, Ramsbottom and Irwell Vale.

My description of a day out on the East Lancashire Railway is written up in 6 sections, geographically from the southern terminus at Heywood to the northern terminus of Rawtenstall.

The sequence of images are based on 'up' and 'down' trips, but all pictures are in the right geographical order, but the image and accompanying text description could refer to any direction.

The date was Nov 22nd 2014 and the day was twin themed i.e. it was an LMS theme day with three working LMS steam locomotives and a Lancashire 'culture' theme day too, complete with Morris dancers and servings of 'Lancashire Hotpot'!

Part 1 Heywood station to Bury Bolton Street station

Heywood station, the southern terminus, east of Bury on the East Lancashire Railway. There is a single platform but a double tracked loop is needed to turn the engine round.

I like the old 'stylish' brickwork of Platform 2 Bury station on the East Lancashire Railway, and the pub/bar the 'Trackside' Free House, which also serves 'Lancashire Hotpot'!
