The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is a 9-mile (14.5 km) long heritage railway in Derbyshire. The headquarters of the railway are at Wirksworth station with the main yard of sidings and the repair and restoration workshops. The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway operates services in both directions between Wirksworth and Duffield and from Wirksworth to Ravenstor. The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway runs south from Wirksworth to Idridgehay to Shottle and terminating at Duffield where it connects with the Midland mainline from Derby to Sheffield. North from Wirksworth is a short branch line up a steep incline to Ravenstor with access to the National Stone Centre and the High Peak Trail. The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is named after the River Ecclesbourne and the route of the railway tracks follows this river from its source to its confluence with the River Derwent at the village of Duffield, still in Derbyshire.

Beyond is the Wirksworth station yard sidings for locomotives, DMUs, carriages and wagons. The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway line is a branch line itself, but there is also a separate 1⁄2 mile (0.8 km) branch operating from Platform 3 at Wirksworth Station up a 1 in 27 gradient incline to Ravenstor (to visit the National Stone Centre or explore the High Peak Trail).

Ecclesbourne Valley Railway passengers are now able to board and alight heritage services at Duffield where a station Platform 3 has been constructed. Ecclesbourne Valley Railway services are timed to connect with East Midlands Trains operating services between Nottingham - Derby - Matlock via the adjacent Duffield Network Rail platforms and so it is possible for passengers to travel to and from Wirksworth by train from anywhere on the national network!

The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway line is principally operated by a large fleet of heritage Diesel Multiple Units. However, there are diesel and steam locomotive hauled trains operate for enthusiasts and tourists alike the there are special Ecclesbourne Valley Railway event days with joint operations with the fleet of classic DMUs.

Another of Ecclesbourne Valley Railway's steam locomotives, also built by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co Limited at their Kilmarnock works, Scotland. "HENRY ELLISON" is also an 0-4-0 saddle tank engine and has a works number of 2217 and was built in 1947.

 

Ecclesbourne Valley Railway has a collected of diesel locomotives in Wirksworth yard, e.g. Class 31s and Class 33.
