Class 58 locos are heavy freight locomotives built by BREL from 1983 to 1987 at Doncaster Works.

They were designed to be better performers than Class 56 diesels, but were they? Of the 50 built (58001 to 58050) many have been transferred for freight work on the European continent e.g. several Class 58 locos working in Spain and France, but others are stored or scrapped.

The CLASS 58 LOCOMOTIVE GROUP is financing and managing the preservation into working order of Class 58 58016.

In mainline blue livery, Class 58 diesel locomotive 58023 in the yard of UK Rail Leasing Leicester (Feb2020).  I don't know who owns Class 58 locomotive 58023, The Battlefield Line ?,  OR is it owned by UK Rail Leasing Locomotives at Leicester where it may be used on hire to Heritage Railways?  Class 58 locomotive 58023 has carried the name "Peterborough Depot"

Class 58 58016 was photographed in the yard of UK Rail Leasing, Leicester in may 2017 and still in Fertis grey livery.

Class 58 locomotives have a top speed of 80 mph.

The maximum tractive effort of Class 58 diesels is 60,000 lbf (267 kN).
