A quick description of the Furness Line railway trip

The Furness Line runs from Barrow-in-Furness to Carnforth. The Furness Line Community Rail Partnership was formed in 2010 to promote this lovely scenic, largely coastal, railway line that runs around the shores of Morecambe Bay, through north Lancashire and much of southern Cumbria with hills of the southern edge of the Lake district National Park in view when looking inland. The tides of Morecambe Bay come right up to the very edge of the Furness Line in places and you get stunning views of the second most important bay for wildlife in Britain. To get to this lovely region served by the Furness Line there are direct trains running from Manchester Airport right through to Barrow-in-Furness at the end of this route, or just use the West Coast Main Line to come to Lancaster and change there for local trains which run along the Furness Line and trains from Leeds also connect to the Furness Line at Carnforth, home of the famous David Lean film, “Brief Encounter”, filmed there in 1945. We now continued our journey on the Furness Line as part of our great north-west scenic circular railway trip

Barrow-in-Furness station, as the Barrow to Lancaster train to take us to Carnforth on the Furness Line railway trip trundles in.

From Barrow-in-Furness station, the next stop is Roose station and then Ulverston station on the Furness Line railway trip with its old Victorian Midland Railway ironwork (above).

The left fork takes you onto the Furness Line to Barrow-in-Furness and the right fork onto the Bentham Line to Hellifield.

The two huge concrete coaling towers from the days of steam, the old Carnforth locomotive depot is now used by the charter West Coast Railway Company, but still on the Furness Line railway trip.

4th and last stage Carnforth - Hellifield - Leeds on the Bentham Line

More on Carnforth Station - now partly a railway heritage centre

West Coast Mainline Trains do NOT stop at Carnforth station these days, but local passenger trains from Lancaster to Barrow do.

A Virgin train express whizzes past Carnforth station and the 'Brief Encounter' heritage centre.

You can often see heritage electric and steam locomotives at Carnforth station - one exchanged for the other to go the non-electrified lines out of Carnforth.

	Although two platforms are used for passenger services for e.g. the Lancaster-Barrow trains, most of the old station buildings have been retained, partly as a heritage 'museum' and partly as some independent shops and a pub.
