Class 91 GEC Bo-Bo Mainline electric locomotives The Class 91 powered trains were marketed as the 'Intercity 225', and class 91 is known as the 'Electra' Class
Electric Locomotives, built 1988-1991. Locomotive power supply 25 kV a.c. (50 Hz)
via pantograph and overhead power lines. The '225' comes from 225
km/hour max. speed (140 mph) and to distinguish them from InterCity 125
trains.

Class 91 traction units were built by BREL at Crewe Works (sub-contractors for GEC) from 1988-1991. The Class 91 hauled passenger coaches and driving trailers were built at the Metro-Cammel works in Birmingham. Class 91 electric locomotives have a maximum tractive effort of 170 kN at 96 mph and Class 91 units have a maximum speed of 125 mph. Class 91 are classified as HST high speed trains. These InterCity 225s were introduced on the electrification of the East coast Main Line in the late 1980s. A Class 91set consists of nine passenger coaches, an electric locomotive (91xxx) and a driving van trailer (82xxx). They were designed to operate at a maximum speed of 225 km/h (140 mph), hence the name InterCity 225, though in fact they only operate up to 125 mph. Class 91 locomotives have a maximum speed of 140 mph, though this is restricted on Network Rail to 125 mph. Class 91 electric locomotives have a maximum rail power of 4700 kW (6300 hp). The Class 91 locomotives have a continuous power rating of 4540 kW (6090 hp). The Class 91 electric locomotives were originally numbered 91001 to 91031, then 100 was added to the original Class 91 number, giving 91101 to 91122 (from 91001 to 91022) and 91124 to 91132 (from 91024 to 91031 plus for some reason? 91023 became 91132)
91131 (ex 91031) was the last locomotive built at Crewe Works - excitedly visited as a child in the late 1950s. Contemporary and Heritage-Preserved, Diesel, Diesel-Electric and Electric Locomotives My Archive Steam Photos from the 1960s

Veteran Class 91 electric locomotive 91124 heading the LNER 0906 service from London Kings Cross to York, Colton Junction footbridge (July 11th, 2020) Not a good photo, but rather nostalgic, as the Class 91s were down to three diagrams on this day. Towards the end of 2019 some Class 91 electric locomotives are being withdrawn from ECML service with LNER.
An uncertain future?: Class 91 electric locomotives 91128 and 91122 parked in the yard along side Crewe station (March 2020)

Bearing in mind the iconic images on 91110, it seems appropriate that Class 91 91110 (as Electra Class 91 91010), on the East Coast Mainline, achieved the UK locomotive speed record of 162mph near Little Bytham, the same stretch of track where Sir Nigel Gresley's A4 Pacific 'MALLARD' achieved the world record of 126 mph for a steam locomotive. Electric Multiple Units Class 373 Eurostar can travel faster (208 mph record on HS1), but this is NOT classed as a locomotive driven train.

Class 91 electric power car locomotive 91128 now named "INTERCITY 50" and in the Virgin Trains East Coast livery.
The Class 91 locomotives were built by BREL at Crewe works. A Driving Van Trailer (driving brake van) is a railway vehicle that allows the driver to operate a locomotive at the opposite end of a train to traction locomotive that powers the train. Therefore, trains operating with a DVT do not require the locomotive to be moved around to the other end of the train at terminal stations, so the train can pull in and pull out with great convenience to all concerned. For the Class 91 driven trains, the DVTs are numbered 82xxx. Note that the DVT vehicles cannot have passenger accommodation because the health and safety rules prohibited carrying passengers in the leading vehicles of trains that travel at more than 100 miles per hour.
