BR Mainline Diesel-Electric Locomotives Contemporary and Heritage-Preserved, Diesel, Diesel-Electric and Electric Locomotives 200 of the Class 40 diesel-electric locomotives were built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows & Robert Stephenson & hawthorn, Darlington between 1958 and 1962. At one time they were the pride of the British Rail early diesel fleet and I remember them well on the North-West mainline roaring through Wigan and Warrington and pas Newton-le-Willows were some were built. After their initial success, by the time the last of the 200 were entering service they were already being replaced on some top-link duties by more powerful diesel and electric locomotives. On relegation from mainline express passenger uses, they ended up doing more 'local' passenger and freight services where they worked for many years, before retirement from regular service by 1985. Midland Railway Centre, Butterley: BR 1Co-Co1 Class 40 D212 AUREOL (D 212, 40 012, 40012, 97407) built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire in 1959. I remember when these Class 40 express passenger train locomotives were introduced on the West coast mainline in the 1960s.
The Barrow Hill Roundhouse: Green liveried BR Class 40 1Co-Co1 D213 ANDANIA (D 213, 40 013, 40013) is named after one of the Cunard Lines liners and was built in 1959 by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry between Newton-le-Willows & Earlestown in Lancashire.
Diesel-Electric Locomotive 1Co-Co1 Class 40 on the NYMR 40145 (D145, D 145 40 145), built in 1961 at the Vulcan Foundry, at Grosmont station departing with a passenger train for Pickering.
D 335, D335 Class 40 40135 (also numbered 97406) at Bury on the East Lancashire Railway. D335 was built at the Vulcan Foundry in 1961 part of the batch of twenty (D325 to D344) built with 'split-box' type headcode. Train identification roller blinds were housed in illuminated units on either side of the nose ends which enabled. D335 (40135) entered service in 1961 and initially allocated to 5A Crewe North. D335 was later reallocated in to Western Lines, then the Stoke Division and by 1969 to the Manchester Division, then in 1972 to the Liverpool Division, 1973 to Springs Branch and Carlisle Kingmoor, and finally in 1975 D335 ended up in Longsight, Manchester where she remained until withdrawal in Jan.1985. Class 40 D335 was a well travelled locomotive!
