English Electric diesel shunter design for British Railways The Class 08 0-6-0 diesel shunting locomotives were built at Crewe, Darlington, Derby, Doncaster and Horwich locomotive works between 1955 and 1962. Class 08 diesel locos were designed for general shunting duties, a task that many of them still perform today. Class 08 diesel shunters have a maximum tractive effort of 156 kN/35000 lbf and a Class 08 diesel shunter's maximum speed is 15 mph.

The basic design of the Class 08 diesel shunter goes back to the 1930s when the LMS were experimenting with the idea of replacing steam loco shunters like the 'Jinty'. The Class 08 diesel shunters were eventually based on the LMS 1945 batch of diesel shunters that later became the Class 11s. The 996 Class 08 shunters were built over 10 years between 1952 and 1962 by the British Railway works at Crewe, Darlington, Derby, Doncaster and Horwich and could be seen at every station of any size. As more freight was transferred to road haulage there were less freight trains and demand for shunters declined and many were withdrawn in the late 1960s. However, about 100 Class 08 diesel shunters still remain in regular use on the network today, mostly in industrial sidings and depot and a further 60 exist in preservation on various heritage railways and continue to shunt wagons, coaches and locos and hauling engineering trains.

Class 08 diesel shunter 08556 at Grosmont shed (NYMR) in June 2018. 08556 lives at Newbridge Permanent Way depot of the NYMR, where it hauls engineering trains for day-to-day maintenance and repairs as well as working hard over the winter period during scheduled major maintenance. Class 08 08556 was built at Darlington in 1959, she spent her working life in London, being allocated to Kings Cross, Finsbury Park and Selhurst depots during a career spanning over 30 years and still growing strong.

(here), D 8850, 08 850, D 4018, D4018). 08850 lives at the
Carriage & Wagon depot at Pickering yard on the NYMR, shunting coaches
into and out of the platforms and sidings, and moving stock around
within the depot. Class 08 08850 was mostly based in the Western and
Southern regions, with a varied career including stints in Bristol,
Eastleigh and Cardiff over for over 30 years.

Class 08 D4141, 08911 (D 4141, D4141 08 911) named 'MATEY' is an 0-6-0 diesel shunting locomotive built at Horwich Works in 1962 and is now owned by the NRM and shunts locos around York national railway Museum, currently painted in British Rail blue.
A 'grumpy' Class 08 diesel shunter 08590 RED LION (was D3757, D 3757 built at Crewe Works in 1959) near Butterley station on the Midland Railway Centre heritage line (June 2015).
