Class 121 units have mechanical transmission and are non-gangwayed single cars with two driving cabs plus driving trailers used for augmentation. The Class 121 driving trailers were later fitted with gangways for coupling to power cars of other classes. Class 121 DMUs were used by Chiltern Railways on peak-hour Aylesbury - Princess Risborough services and by Arriva Trains Wales on Cardiff Queen Street -Cardiff Bay shuttle services.
