History of Stanier Black Five 4-6-0 steam locomotive BR 45025, LMS 5025

The Stanier Black Five locomotives like 45025/5025 were a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives designed by William Stanier for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). 842 were built between 1934 and 1951. These locomotives were known for their versatility, earning the nickname "Black Five" due to their power classification and black livery.

Regarding BR 45025 (formerly LMS 5025), this locomotive was part of the Black Five series and was renumbered under British Railways (BR) after nationalization. It is currently undergoing restoration at Ian Riley & Sons in Bury. Many Black Fives like 45025/5025 survived until the end of steam on British Railways in 1968, and 18 including 45025/5025 have been preserved.

Those were the days at near Winwick Junction near Warrington, when you got a friendly wave from a Black Five engine driver!
