Historical Background of 75069

75069 was one of 80 BR Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0 locomotives built between 1951 and 1957. Designed for mixed traffic duties on secondary routes, they were essentially tender versions of the Class 4 2-6-4T and shared characteristics with the GWR Manor class, but built to the universal loading gauge.

Operational History of 75069

• 1955: Entered service at Dover Marine.
• 1960: Fitted with a double chimney at Eastleigh.
• 1960s: Allocated to Stewarts Lane, Nine Elms, and Eastleigh.
• 1966: Withdrawn from service after just 11 years and sent to Barry Scrapyard.

Preservation & Heritage of 75069

• 1971: SVR News announced plans to rescue 75069.
• 1973: Acquired from Barry Scrapyard by the 75069 Fund.
• 1984: Restoration completed (still in undercoat) in time for SVR Enthusiasts Weekend.
• 1984–1994: Regularly operated on the Severn Valley Railway and mainline charters including the Red Dragon and Cambrian routes. Participated in GWR 150 celebrations.
• 1994: Withdrawn due to cracked firebox flange.
• 2013–2018: Underwent a £900,000 overhaul involving 25,000 hours of work.
• 2018–Present: Returned to active service on the SVR.

Liveries and Identification of 75069

• Livery History:
  • Originally carried BR lined black with early crest.
  • Later repainted in BR lined green during preservation.
  • Displayed undercoat grey briefly during 1984 Enthusiasts Weekend.
  • Currently wears BR lined black with late crest.
• Cabside Markings:
  • Features a yellow triangle below the number, indicating Alfloc water treatment equipment used to reduce boiler scale.
• Numbering:
  • Always carried 75069; no known alternative numbers or names.
