Class 801 electric multiple units

62005 is owned by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Grop (NELPG). 62005 would never have carried the LNER number 2005 because it entered service directly into the recently nationalised British Railways. K1 62005 was built in 1949 at NBL to design by Thompson

The LNER Class K1 steam locomotive, including 62005, was designed by Edward Thompson and built by the North British Locomotive Company between 1949 and 1950. It was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type locomotive, meaning it had two leading wheels, six driving wheels, and no trailing wheels.

Technical Specifications

  • Gauge: Standard gauge (4 ft 8½ in / 1,435 mm)

  • Driving Wheel Diameter: 5 ft 2 in (1.575 m)

  • Boiler Pressure: 225 psi (1.55 MPa)

  • Cylinders: Two, outside

  • Cylinder Size: 20 in × 26 in (508 mm × 660 mm)

  • Tractive Effort: 32,080 lbf (142.70 kN)

  • Fuel Type: Coal

  • Fuel Capacity: 7.5 long tons (7.6 t)

  • Water Capacity: 4,200 imperial gallons (19,000 L)

Operational History

62005 was delivered to British Railways in June 1949 and initially ran from Eastfield shed, Glasgow. Over the years, it was allocated to various depots, including Darlington, Heaton, Ardsley, York, North Blyth, Tyne Dock, and Holbeck. It was withdrawn from service on December 30, 1967, but survived due to being used as a temporary stationary boiler at ICI North Tees Works.

Preservation

Instead of being scrapped, 62005 was saved by a consortium and later donated to the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) in 1972. It was restored and painted in LNER green livery, entering service on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in 1974. Since then, it has made several mainline excursions, including runs between Whitby and Battersby.

62005 remains operational today, continuing to be a preserved steam locomotive that delights railway enthusiasts. Would you like to know more about its current activities? 🚂
