The blue liveried, and the most famous LNER A4 Pacific 4-6-2 locomotive  4468/60022 MALLARD in York National Railway Museum, built at the famous Doncaster Plant Works in 1937 (LNER 4468).

In 2010-2011 Gresley Pacific 4468 Mallard made a guest appearance at Shildon NRM 'Locomotion' railway museum.

 

 

4468 MALLARD alongside its great rival, the equally streamlined Stanier Pacific 6229 in LMS maroon in York NRM.

LNER A4 No. 4468 / BR 60022 “Mallard” is the world’s fastest steam locomotive, built in 1938 and preserved at the National Railway Museum in York. It has carried multiple numbers and liveries, and its shed allocations and operational history reflect its elite status among express passenger locomotives.

Historical Timeline

  • 1938: Built at Doncaster and entered service with LNER as No. 4468 “Mallard”.

  • 3 July 1938: Achieved world steam speed record of 126 mph on Stoke Bank near Grantham while hauling a dynamometer car.

  • WWII Era: Streamlining partially removed for maintenance ease; restored post-war.

  • 1946: Renumbered to LNER No. 22.

  • 1948: Became BR No. E22, then renumbered to 60022 under British Railways.

  • 1963: Withdrawn from service on 25 April.

  • 1963–1986: Displayed at Clapham Museum, then moved to York.

  • 1986–present: Static exhibit at the National Railway Museum, York. Briefly steamed in 1986 for movement.


Shed Allocations

Mallard was allocated to several key depots during its career:

  • Doncaster (initial allocation)

  • Kings Cross “Top Shed” – for London–Edinburgh express services

  • Grantham – during wartime and post-war periods

  • New England (Peterborough) – final BR allocation before withdrawal

Heritage and Legacy

  • Mallard is one of six surviving A4s out of 35 built.

  • Its record-breaking run was part of Gresley’s push to rival German and American streamliners.

  • In 2013, all six surviving A4s were reunited at York for the “Mallard 75” celebration.

  • It remains a symbol of British engineering excellence and is a centrepiece of the National Railway Museum.

The meeting of three of the six surviving Gresley A4 Pacifics (60008/4496, 60010/4489 and 60022/4468)around the turntable of the Main Hall in York NRM museum. All six survivors are to meet up in the summer of 2013 in York.
