History of the GWR 1366 Class
Great Western Railway (GWR) 1369 is a 0-6-0PT (Pannier Tank) steam locomotive, part of the GWR 1366 Class. This class of locomotives was designed by Charles Collett and built at Swindon Works.

The 1366 Class was introduced in 1934. It was a useful design due to its relatively light weight and short wheelbase, making it particularly suitable for shunting duties, dockside branches, and other lines with sharp curvatures. Interestingly, the design principles for this class can be traced back to Francis Trevithick's 1873 design for the Cornwall Mineral Railway, which featured outside sloping cylinders and Allan straight-link motion. These features were perpetuated through the 1361 Class (1910) by G.J. Churchward and then the 1366 Class by Collett, with the addition of Belpaire fireboxes and pannier tanks. Only six locomotives of the 1366 Class were built (numbered 1366-1371).

Operational History of 1369

Locomotive 1369 had a varied operational life under both the Great Western Railway and British Railways (BR).

Early Service: Upon construction in 1934, it entered service with the GWR. Its light weight and short wheelbase made it ideal for shunting and working on lines with tight curves, such as dock areas.
Weymouth Quay: A notable part of 1369's working life was its deployment to Weymouth Docks. From April 1960 to June 1962, it worked the Weymouth Quay line, which threaded its way through the harbour amongst pedestrians and cars. To ensure safety, a warning bell was fitted to the locomotive, and trains had to proceed at walking pace.
Cornwall: As diesels began to replace steam locomotives in dockside duties, 1369 was transferred to the Wenfordbridge china clay branch in Cornwall in 1962. It remained there until 1964, when it was once again displaced by diesel traction.
Withdrawal and Preservation: 1369 had the distinction of being the last steam engine to run in Cornwall under BR auspices. It was withdrawn from service in 1964. Fortunately, it was saved for preservation from the famous Barry scrapyard in 1974.
Preservation Era: 1369 found its way to the South Devon Railway, where it underwent a significant overhaul, returning to steam in 1996. While it can be a little small for general day-to-day work on the South Devon Railway, it excels on open days and during quieter periods. It has also travelled to other heritage railways for charter work. In 1998, it suffered a broken crank axle while operating on the West Somerset Railway, just before its planned move to Buckfastleigh.
Recent Activity: 1369 continues to be an active preserved locomotive. It completed a two-year overhaul in autumn 2019, seeing duties at Buckfastleigh for shunting and driver experience. More recently, in early 2025, it undertook special brake van trips and photo charters on the Bristol Harbour Railway before returning to the South Devon Railway. The bell originally fitted for its Weymouth Quay duties was stolen in 2014 but has since been recovered and purchased by the South Devon Railway Association.
