Saddle Tank locomotive  Ex GWR 0-4-0ST 1338 was built by Kitson & Company, Airedale Foundry, Hunslet, Leeds, West Yorkshire in 1898. GWR Engine 1338 was rebuilt at Tyndall Street Works in 1916 for the Cardiff Railway. Photographed in the Didcot Railway Centre. GREAT WESTERN painted on the side of 1338's saddle tanks and the use GWR brass number plate [1338].

The GWR 1338 is a fascinating steam locomotive with a rich history. Originally built in 1898 by Kitsons of Leeds for the Cardiff Railway, it was numbered No. 5 before being absorbed into the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1923, where it was renumbered 1338. Its twin, No. 6, became GWR 1339, but was scrapped in 1934.

Operational History

After being absorbed into the GWR, 1338 was initially stored but later loaned to Stewarts & Lloyds Ltd of Swansea during World War II. It was then transferred to Taunton depot in 1943 for work in Bridgwater docks, later moving to Swansea docks in 1960. The locomotive was finally withdrawn in September 1963, making it the last standard gauge locomotive absorbed into the GWR to be retired.

In April 1964, 1338 was saved from scrapping and moved to Bleadon & Uphill station, where it remained hidden among bushes. In 1987, it was relocated to Didcot Railway Centre, where it was restored to working order. However, its boiler certificate has now expired, and it is currently on static display.

The GWR 0-4-0ST steam locomotives were acquired by the Great Western Railway at the 1923 grouping. They came from small railways (mostly in South Wales) and from contractors. 1338 survived into British Railways ownership in 1948 and is preserved.
