This is a BIG website, you need to take time to explore it [SEARCH BOX]

My spectroscopy section continues to be developed as the database builds up!  I welcome any Email comments or suggestions for spectra to write up on my website, BUT only for pre-university level.

PLEASE read the 9 points below about my approach to magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Sub-index for pages on H-1 NMR spectroscopy

15.3.1 The theory of H-1 NMR spectroscopy and spectrometer - low/high resolution spectra

15.3.2 The uses and applications of 1H (proton) NMR spectroscopy

15.3.3 Index of H-1 (proton) NMR spectra of organic compounds (below on this page)

15.3.4 Some simple NMR-IR problem solving questions

15.3.3 1H NMR spectra index:

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING 9 POINTS CAREFULLY

(and bear in mind this is a pre-university chemistry website)

  1. I have included some alternative names and 'old names' (still in common use - including mine and other internet databases), BUT, DO NOT USE 'OLD NAMES' IN EXAMS and ANY OF YOUR ACADEMIC WORK, without good reason!.
  2. Most spectra described and interpreted were obtained with the sample dissolved in CDCl3 solvent (trichloromethane in which the 1H atom has been substituted by a the 2H isotope - hydrogen-2 or deuterium).
  3. In terms of spin-spin coupling from the possible proton magnetic orientations I have only considered the interactions of protons on adjacent carbon atoms e.g. -CH2-CH3, protons etc.
  4. BUT NOT e.g. CH3-O-CH2 or CH2-CO-CH3, where the protonated carbons are separated by an atom NOT bonded to any protons, and there are also interpretation problems with alcohols.
  5. AND at pre-university level, I've assumed that equivalent protons next to each other (same carbon atom or adjacent carbon atoms) in the same chemical environment will NOT split each others NMR resonance signals.
  6. ALSO, at pre-university level, assume N-H and O-H protons do NOT normally cause splitting and neither are they split by adjacent protons, this is due to the rapid exchange of protons between the molecules e.g. OH protons in alcohols and carboxylic acids or NH protons in amines or amides.
  7. At pre-university level I have ignored spin-spin coupling resonance lines due to 1H and 13C interactions or 13C and 13C spin interactions and any other atoms capable of producing NMR resonances.
  8. Chemical shifts are a set of relative values, usually based on the reference standard tetramethylsilane.

    • Si(CH4)4, which has 16 protons in an identical molecular/chemical environment.
    • TMS gives a single sharp reference signal significantly different in frequency from those emitted from most 1H nuclei chemical environments of interest to chemical structure investigations.

  9. At university level, points 3 to 7 may have to be re-considered and taken into account when interpreting 1H NMR spectra.
