The 7 aliphatic non-cyclic alcohol and ether structural isomers of molecular formula C4H10O (Mr = 74)

This is an example of functional group isomerism (alcohol C-O-H linkage, ether C-O-C linkage)

There are four isomeric alcohols and three isomeric ethers.

(1) butan-1-ol, bpt 118oC, isomers of C4H10O alcohols ethers  structural formula , alcohols and ether structure and naming (c) doc b , is a primary alcohol

(2) butan-2-ol, isomers of C4H10O alcohols ethers  structural formula , alcohols and ether structure and naming (c) doc b is a secondary alcohol

This has a chiral (asymmetric) carbon atom (2nd C), so can also exhibit R/S stereoisomerism

R/S stereoisomers of butan-2-ol enantiomers, optical isomers of molecular formula C4H10O R/S stereoisomers of butan-2-ol (enantiomers, optical isomers)

(3) 2-methylpropan-1-ol, isomers of C4H10O alcohols ethers  structural formula , alcohols and ether structure and naming (c) doc b , is primary alcohol

(4) 2-methylpropan-2-ol, isomers of C4H10O alcohols ethers  structural formula , alcohols and ether structure and naming (c) doc b , is a tertiary alcohol

(5) ethoxyethane,  isomers of C4H10O alcohols ethers  structural formula , alcohols and ether structure and naming (c) doc b (ether)

(6) 1-methoxypropane isomers of C4H10O alcohols ethers  structural formulaalcohols and ether structure and naming (c) doc b  (ether)

(7) 2-methoxypropane isomers of C4H10O alcohols ethers  structural formula , alcohols and ether structure and naming (c) doc b  (ether)
