Sutton Bank and NW Moors Index 11. Walking in Bilsdale - Fangdale Beck
Driving through Bilsdale is quite a scenic drive and the tall mast of the Bilsdale TV and radio transmitter does stand out! There are lots of good walks based on Bilsdale and several good parking places.
There is a parking lay-by by the Church of St John the Evangelist, ~3 miles SSE of Chop Gate, which is opposite a green telephone box just south of Fangdale Beck.
The bridge over road to Fangdale Beck to Fangdale Beck! and the green telephone box!
You initially go up the road in the Chop Gate direction and then turn right, heading west to High Crossett Farm (above).
Its then a pleasant walk south through fields to Low Crossett Farm ...
... and passing above Fangdale Grange.
The path gradually gets nearer the road and eventually meeting it at Spout House and the Sun Inn.
Spout House and the modern day Sun Inn, the buildings are near the Ryedale District (to the south) - Hambleton District (to the north) boundary.
Spout House is a 16th century cruck framed cottage that was the original Sun Inn, its successor stands to the right of it.
Spout House with its small mullioned windows.
You walk south down the road for a short distance before heading right (west) to Helen House Wood and south to Benhill Bank. You then turn sharp right and heading north up to Wethercote Farm.
You west of the farm and the forestation.
Soon after the end of the plantations you head north-east down to Fangdale Back by track or partly by road via Malkin Bower.
The walking in Bilsdale is not spectacular but, once away from the busy Chop Gate - Helmsley road the woodland and moorland have their own charm. See also a walk from Hawnby at the south end of Bilsdale (Helmsley section page 19). AND A Circular walk from Chop Gate over Cold Moor and Cringle Moor
