35. Tynemouth (2) The Priory and more Sea Scenes Scenes of Northumbria - Northumberland It is thought a monastery has existed on the northern promontory of Tynemouth at the mouth of the River Tyne since the 7th century. Despite attacks by the Danes it somehow managed to survive and was refounded around 1090 as a Benedictine priory by Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumberland. The Priory was dissolved in 1539 but its story continued because it was an important medieval fortress (see separate page about Tynemouth Castle - Gatehouse) Nothing of the Saxon church survives and very little of the Norman church built between 1090 and 1130. Much of what you see today dates from around 1990 onwards. *
