The Cathedral Church of All Saints

All Saints Church, Derby, was raised to the rank of cathedral in 1927, previously being the principal parish church of the town.

The fine 3-stage 15th century tower of Derby Cathedral

The interior of Derby Cathedral, undergoing much restoration in May 2015. Apart from the tower, the rest of the church was rebuilt in 1723-1725 by James Gibbs to a design based on his work for St Martin's in the field in London. The naves and aisles are separated by Tuscan columns on tall pedestals.

St Mary's Church

St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church was built to the Gothic designs of the architect A. W. Pugin and the church was consecrated in 1839. St Mary, in Bridge Gate, was built in 1838-1839 and enlarged in 1853. The tall narrow tower is shown below and the east aisle (right).

 

St Mary's, Derby is ashlar-faced stonework with a tall narrow west tower (actually faces south!).

 

Tall narrow naves are separated from the nave by slender piers without capitals. There are clerestory windows and the interior design is Perpendicular. The chancel ends in an apse beyond the altar.

St Peter's Church

St Peter is the only really medieval church in Derby, though much of the exterior stonework seems new or restored.

Looking west down the nave of St Peter's Church, Derby. Much of what see is probably the result of a major rebuilding of St Peter's in the early 14th century.
