The Church of the Holy Cross at East Gilling. The west tower whose windows and bell-openings suggest to Pevsner a post-Reformation date of the later 16th century. PLEASE LEAVE a DONATION to HELP in the upkeep of this fine church.
The arcades are the earliest part of the church. They consist of three bays with circular piers, square abaci with slightly pointed double chamfered arches of ~1200. The chancel was rebuilt in the 14th century.
An early 14th century slab to a knight whose bust with praying hands appears in a sunk quatrefoil and his feet in a sunk trefoil.
Stone effigies of Sir Nicholas Fairfax (1572) and two wives probably dating from the later 16th century.

Its a pleasant rural walk to the village of Stonegrave as you head NNW towards Hovingham Carrs.
A short section of the path follows the bed of the now disused east-west rural railway line and then north-west to Stonegrave.

The tower of Stonegrave Minster stands out above the tiny hamlet of Stonegrave.
Stonegrave Minster or Holy Trinity Church was founded before AD 757. The exterior is all of 1863 by G. Fowler Jones except for the unbuttressed tower of the 12th century. PLEASE LEAVE a DONATION to HELP in the upkeep of this fine church.

In the north aisle is a low tomb recess with a canopy containing the effigies of Robert Thornton (1418) and his wife, he is bearded and both are praying.
Some really fine stone carving of the capitals of the pillars of the north arcade.
A fine 10th century Anglo-Saxon wheel-head cross.
The round 'Romanesque' arches of the aisle, this three bay arcade may date from the 12th century.
West side of the west tower. We then walked back across the fields to East Gilling.
