You can do a circular walk from Appleton-le-Moors that includes the now disused Spaunton limestone quarry.

The main (north-south) street of Appleton-le-Moors.  You go down to the bottom of the village and turn right down Headlands Road.

 

You pass a memorial stone to Catherine McDougall 1890-1950 amongst some beech trees. It also says 1932-1950 because Catherine McDougall was Secretary of the Ryedale Branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England. Just after this on the 'Headlands Road' you fork right down through a field and wood to come out above Spaunton Quarry.

 

Spaunton Quarry, now being landscaped with many trees planted, after considerable quantities of limestone have been quarried.

Sometimes a fossil is spotted in the limestone, but rarely of good quality.

From the quarry you can take a permitted track heading northwest to meet a minor road which you go up to Lingmoor Farm.

 

Going across the fields by Lingmoor Farm

 

There are always horses in the field by Lingmoor farm

 

From Lingmoor Farm  you head northeast  then do a U turn  to meet up with Lingmoor Lane (track pictured above).

 

You then head NEE along Lingmoor Lane and turn right, almost due south down the track of Ings Balk (shown above).

 

You then turn left, almost due west along South Ings Lane Track, heading up the green road back to Appleton-le-Moors

 

The path leads up to Christ Church and Appleton Hall (on the right) in Appleton-le-Moors

 

 

Time a snack after a most pleasant walk.
