The classification of vertebrates and some problems with the five 'traditional' classifications - some animals have a mixture of features that apparently 'don't fit in' !!!

(3) The classification of vertebrates and some problems with classifications

The main characteristics of the phylum Chordata as animals with a supporting rod running the length of the body, an example of this being the backbone in vertebrates.

Vertebrates (animals with backbones) are divided into five classes - groups of amphibians, birds, fish, mammals and reptiles

 

Amphibians cold blooded, live in water and on land, four limbs and moist skin, on land breather through lungs, in water breathe through skin, lay eggs in water e.g. frog spawn hatch into tadpoles which swim using tails and breathe through gills. Frogs, toads, salamanders and newts.

 

Birds warm blooded, covered with feathers and all have wings but not all can fly, beaks for pecking and tearing food, lay eggs covered with a hard shell, light hollow bones to reduce weight in flight, live on land or water

 

Fish cold blooded, characterised by having skin scales, fins and gills for oxygen intake, swim bladder to buoyant under water, most fish reproduce by laying eggs that are fertilised by the male fish.

 

Mammals warm blooded, have hairy skin covering their body, young are fed on mother's milk from mammary glands, some mammals can lay eggs that develop after hatching into babies, some mammals give birth into a pouch in which the baby further develops, but most are placental mammals in which the baby fully develops in the womb (connected to mother by the placenta) before birth.

 

Reptiles are cold blooded, covered with hard scales giving them a tough scaly dry skin, breathe through lungs, lay eggs with tough shells. Lizards, crocodiles, snakes and tortoises.

 

As you can see above, scientists place vertebrates into the five groups based on:

a) Oxygen absorption methods – lungs, gills and skin

b) Reproduction – internal or external fertilisation, oviparous (lay eggs) or viviparous (give birth to live young)

c) Thermoregulation – homeotherms ('warm blooded' - kept at a constant temperature) and poikilotherms ('cold blooded' - body temperature varies with external temperature).

Classification problems in assigning the animal organisms vertebrate group

There can be problems associated with assigning vertebrates to a specific group based on their anatomy and reproduction methods - why many vertebrates are difficult to classify.

e.g. the duck-billed platypus has a bill like a duck, tail like a beaver, its homeothermic, lays eggs but suckles its young. Not an easy one to classify! but its closer to a mammal than any of the other four vertebrate groups!

Accurate classification may also be complicated by:

a) variation within a species

b) hybridisation in ducks produces viable new species

c) ring species - a group of related populations that live near each other, neighbouring populations may interbreed but those well separated geographically may not.

Sorting out which are genuinely different species is not easy.

The definition of a species as organisms that produce fertile offspring may have limitations:

Some organisms do not always reproduce sexually and some hybrids are fertile.

Some organisms can reproduce asexually but are still classed as the same species.

Many closely related species can interbreed producing viable offspring and technically classed as a different sub-species.

Overview of Vertebrate Classification

Vertebrates belong to the phylum Chordata, characterized by a supporting rod along the body—in most cases, a backbone. They are divided into five main classes based on structural and physiological traits:

    • Hollow bones for flight adaptation

  5. Mammals

    • Warm-blooded

    • Covered in hair or fur

    • Give birth to live young (except monotremes)

    • Feed young with milk from mammary glands

Problems in Classification When an Animal Has Non-Vertebrate Features

Some organisms exhibit traits that do not neatly fit into a single vertebrate class, leading to classification challenges.

  • Duck-Billed Platypus (Monotreme Mammal)

    • Lays eggs like reptiles/birds but suckles young like mammals

    • Has a bill similar to a duck

    • Possesses venomous spurs (uncommon in mammals)

  • Lungfish (Fish with Amphibian Traits)

    • Can breathe air using lungs (unlike typical fish)

    • Survives in dry conditions by burrowing into mud

  • Flightless Birds (Birds with Reptilian Traits)

    • Some birds (e.g., ostriches) lack flight adaptations

    • Similar skeletal structure to certain dinosaurs

  • Whales & Dolphins (Aquatic Mammals Resembling Fish)

    • Live in water but breathe air through lungs

    • Lack gills, unlike fish

These classification challenges highlight the limitations of traditional classification systems, leading to the development of modern phylogenetic approaches that use DNA analysis to determine evolutionary relationships.
