30. A walk across Fylingdales Moor to Lilla Cross

July 2011 There is a track that runs west to south-west directly from the car-park at Jugger Howe on the A171 Whitby to Scarborough Road.

The Jugger Howe lay-by which provides good car parking for the start of the walk.

Welcome to Fylingdales Moor and all its wildlife, the area, with the landowners consent (Strickland Estate), is partially managed by the Hawk and Owl Trust.

Good to see the early bell heather on Jugger Howe Moor, most welcome after such a bleak winter on the North York Moors.

Onward westwards!

Lilla Cross, a medieval cross, stands on Lilla Howe, a much earlier bronze age prehistoric tumulus or burial mound. The cross is medieval, but way well replace a stone set up in the mid-7th century to commemorate the bravery of Lilla ... read on! Lilla Cross is mentioned in the earliest charters giving the boundaries of 'Whitby Strand' and possible pre-Norman, i.e. Saxon boundaries.

OS point SE 889987 On the cross is marked a capital C for Cholmley (estate) and G for Goathland (parish). Lilla Cross is the oldest cross on the North York Moors and is one of the earliest Christian monuments in Northern England. It marks the grave of Lilla, chief minister to King Edwin of Deira. In AD 626 Lilla saved the life of the king from assassination when he flung himself between the king and the dagger bearing assassin, he died, but the king survived. The Venerable Bede wrote about the incident in his 'History of the English Church and People' from his monastery in Jarrow in AD 731. It is thought that Lilla was buried in the existing tumulus and hence the name of the mound, Lilla Howe, though although archaeological excavations produced Anglo-Danish artefacts, they dated from several hundred years after Lilla's death, so, it is unlikely that Lilla is actually buried there - BUT, its a good story!

There is also a small 'Christian' cross inscribed on the stone.

Way in the distance to the east is the Fylingdales Early Warning Station whose origins lie in the 'Cold-War' with the Russian block after WWII

Time to return, retracing our steps, as we look back east from Lilla Cross, across Fylingdales Moor, to the sea
