Creevykeel Court Tomb:

Creevykeel prehistoric court tomb on the road from Donegal to Sligo. This is a fine example of a 'court cairn' with a full court circle of stones inside a wedge-shaped cairn that might have been 230 feet long.

Creevykeel Court Tomb Overview

Creevykeel is one of the largest and best-preserved Neolithic court tombs (court cairns) in Ireland, located beside the N15 near Cliffoney in north County Sligo. It sits in a prominent roadside position in a low field and is state‑owned and managed as a national monument.

Date and Typology

  • Period: Neolithic, generally dated between c. 4000 and 2500 BC.
  • Type: Court tomb (also called court cairn), a ritual/burial monument characteristic of early farming communities in Ireland, combining an open forecourt with a segmented burial gallery covered by a cairn.

Monument Layout and Architecture

  • Overall plan: A large, roughly trapezoidal cairn containing an oval‑shaped court leading into a multipart gallery. The court measures roughly 15 m × 10 m, among the largest known in Ireland.
  • Court: An open, oval forecourt formed by the cairn and paired portal stones that would have framed ritual activity before entering the gallery.
  • Burial gallery: Divided by upright orthostats into multiple chambers; the inner gallery includes two primary chambers and a further sequence of three corbelled chambers or compartments at the rear, originally roofed and then overlain by the cairn material.
  • Materials: Local sandstone and fieldstone used for orthostats, cairn material, and kerb structures; the cairn is wedge/trapezoid in plan and remains large enough to fill its own small field.

Excavation History and Finds

  • Major excavation: Carried out in 1935 (excavation and consolidation work by archaeologists and the Office of Public Works), which exposed the internal plan and recovered secure archaeological material.
  • Human remains and burials: Excavators found multiple cremation burials (at least four cremations recorded), indicating mortuary use that included cremation rites.
  • Artefacts: Neolithic pottery sherds, polished stone axes, flint knives and scrapers, and two clay balls were recovered from the galleries and contexts within the cairn.
  • Later activity evidence: Early Christian period activity was identified nearby and within the site environs, including evidence for iron‑working and a small kiln used by metalworkers, showing reuse of the monument and its immediate landscape in later prehistoric or historic times.

Later Use, Landscape and Context

  • Contemporary setting: Creevykeel is one of a cluster of megalithic monuments in the area; a second megalithic structure lay about 300 m to the north until demolished circa 1890.
  • Landscape significance: The tomb occupies a visible position within the Sligo coastal hinterland, set in a landscape with other passage, wedge and court cairns that together speak to a dense Neolithic ritual and funerary landscape.
  • Continuity of use: Evidence for early medieval/early Christian reuse (iron‑smelting/kiln) demonstrates continuity of activity and the monument’s continuing significance to later communities.

Preservation, Interpretation and Visiting

  • Protection and care: The site is a National Monument in the care of the Office of Public Works and is presented as an unguided visitor site with signage and car parking close by.
  • What visitors see today: The cairn, the court area, surviving orthostats of the gallery and traces of the kerb; post‑excavation consolidation has left the monument readily interpretable on the ground and visible from the roadside.
  • Importance: Creevykeel is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s finest court tombs for its size, state of preservation, and clear architectural sequence, making it a key reference site for Neolithic burial and ritual practices in Ireland.
