5c. Penmaenmawr on the North Wales Coast Scenes from Wales [Author photographer © Dr WP Brown PhD plus AI, page updated Mar 29th 2026]Penmaenmawr is a place I once knew well as we used to have family holidays here in the 1950s. It was great to play on the beach and watch the steam trains go by. You could hear the whistle of the Irish Mail train at night! There were lovely walks on the hills above Penmaenmawr, not high, but very attractive in their own way, and what views down to the beach and the island of Anglesey. Penmaenmawr is in the Borough of Conwy.

Below is a clear, structured, evidence‑based history and archaeological overview of Penmaenmawr, drawing directly on the most authoritative material available from museum, heritage, and archaeological sources. It's a place where prehistoric industry, Victorian quarrying, and seaside tourism all intersect in a uniquely dramatic landscape. Penmaenmawr: A North Wales Landscape Shaped by 6,000 Years of Human ActivityPenmaenmawr is one of the most historically layered places on the North Wales coast. Its story stretches from Neolithic axe‑making on the mountain slopes, through 19th‑ and 20th‑century granite quarrying, to its reinvention as a Victorian and Edwardian seaside resort. Today, its heritage is preserved and interpreted by the Penmaenmawr Museum, which documents everything from prehistory to modern social life. 1. Summary: Why Penmaenmawr MattersPenmaenmawr is exceptional because it combines:
It is a place where archaeology, industry, and coastal leisure all meet in one dramatic setting.
The sea, beach and the great quarry above Penmaenmawr, and nice white waves rolling onto the beach. On the left is a footbridge over the railway to the beach at Penmaenmawr. The scene is most familiar and nostalgic. I remember family holidays in the 1950s, staying at a Methodist Guest House in Penmaenmawr, and playing on the beach and watching the steam trains go by, what a bonus as a keen trainspotter in those days!
The great Penmaenmawr quarry, still working after maybe perhaps as great as 5000 years or more! It was certainly worked in Neolithic times for its hard granite stone. *
The hills above the western part of the town contain some of the hardest rock in Britain, where Penmaenmawr granite is quarried. It was shaped 5000 years ago to make stone tools and in modern times for surfacing roads and pavements, ballast for railway tracks etc.

The main shopping street in Penmaenmawr overlooked by the granite hills. I remember as a child the ironwork of the Victorian arcade in the left photograph.
