Cadir Idris walk: There is a handy little car park at Ty-Nant, west of Dolgellau.

and passed the information board about the land management in the Snowdonia National Park to the foot of the Pony Path up Cadair Idris.

	Ty-Nant and Cader Idris (Cadair Idris), Wales: There is a good car park and picnic area at Ty-Nant is a few miles south-west of Dolgellau. Tynant is an excellent base and starting point for climbing Cader Idris Mountain. The is also a bunkhouse at TY-NANT house which is just on the left of the track near the start of the 'Pony Track' walking route up Cader Idris. The YHA Youth Hostel at Kings in the Penmaenpool direction is not too far away either. There are glorious views all the way up and down Cader Idris on the Pony Track, particularly looking towards the sea as well as looking for the summit! Even though on our day out there, the top was a bit misty, never-the-less we pressed on to the summit! A splendid and satisfying walk before spending the night at Machynlleth before visiting the Centre for Alternative Technology the next day.

Notes about Cader Idris

Cader Idris is one of Wales’s most storied mountains: a dramatic glacial massif of Ordovician volcanic rock, wrapped in myth, folklore, and early travel writing, and today one of the most popular climbs in southern Eryri (Snowdonia). The Pony Track from Tŷ Nant is the classic northern ascent — steady, scenic, and historically the “tourist route” since Victorian times.

The History of Cader Idris

Core identity:

Height: 893 m (Pen y Gader / Penygader) — one of the highest peaks in southern Snowdonia.
Geology: A complex block of Ordovician volcanic and sedimentary rocks, carved by glaciers into deep cwms, moraines, and sharp ridges.
Landscape significance: The northern slopes are especially dramatic, with steep crags, screes, and late-lying snow. The massif forms part of a 1100‑hectare SSSI and National Nature Reserve due to its geomorphology and upland ecology.

Folklore and Myth

Cader Idris is one of the most myth-saturated mountains in Wales:

“Chair of Idris” — named for Idris, either a giant-philosopher or a 7th‑century prince who supposedly used the summit as his seat to study the stars.
Madman, poet, or dead: A 16th‑century legend claims that anyone who sleeps on the summit will wake as a poet, a madman, or not at all. The poet Evan Evans famously tried it.
Arthurian echoes: Llyn Cau is said to imprison a water dragon subdued by King Arthur; Gwyn ap Nudd and the Wild Hunt are said to roam the slopes.

Early Tourism

By the Romantic period, Cader Idris became a celebrated destination for travellers from Dolgellau and Barmouth. 19th‑century accounts describe guided ascents with donkeys, and the Pony Path became the established “gentleman’s route” to the summit.

Climbing Cader Idris via the Pony Track (Tŷ Nant)

Why choose this route?
It is the most straightforward and historically the most used ascent, with a well‑engineered path, excellent views, and only light scrambling near the summit. It is still a serious mountain walk with steep sections and rapidly changing weather.

Distance: 9–10 km (out-and-back)
Ascent: ~670–700 m
Time: 3.5–5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate–hard (steady incline, rocky upper slopes)

Step-by-Step Route Description (Tŷ Nant → Pony Track → Pen y Gader)

This synthesises the Snowdonia National Park route and multiple walking guides.

1. Tŷ Nant to the lower slopes

From the car park, turn right on the road and quickly left at the sign for Tŷ Nant farmhouse.
Cross a concrete bridge and pass through woodland.
Several gates and small bridges lead you onto open pasture.
The cliffs of Cader Idris begin to appear on your left.

2. The steady grassy rise

The path levels briefly across grassy slopes.
Pass through a series of gates and follow the wall uphill.
The gradient increases as you approach the ridge, with zigzags easing the climb.

3. Rhiw Gwredydd and the large erratic boulder

A distinctive large boulder marks the top of the zigzags.
A ladder stile (around SH691135) leads onto a gravel track marked by cairns.
Views open dramatically across the Mawddach and the Rhinogydd.

4. Approaching the summit ridge

The path nears the cliff edge but remains safe in good conditions.
Look for the famous pillow lava outcrops — remnants of ancient seabed volcanism.
A short rocky scramble leads to the final ridge.

5. Summit: Pen y Gader / Penygader (893 m)

A stone shelter stands near the summit cairn.
Views include:
- North: Rhinogydd
- West: Cardigan Bay
- East: Aran Fawddwy
- South: Mid Wales uplands
Return the same way unless conditions are perfect and you are experienced enough to descend the Fox’s Path, which is steep and loose.

Landscape, Ecology & Archaeology

The massif contains alpine plant communities, blanket bog, bilberry heath, and remnants of sessile oak woodland on lower slopes.
Archaeological traces are sparse: mainly 19th‑century enclosure walls, sheepfolds, and a single prehistoric settlement site.
The mountain’s dramatic cwms (especially Cwm Cau) are classic examples of glacial cirques.

Practical Tips for the Pony Track

Parking: Tŷ Nant car park (paid; often busy).
Footwear: Sturdy boots — the upper path is rocky and loose in places.
Weather: Cader Idris is high enough for sudden weather changes; cloud can descend rapidly.
Dogs: Allowed but must be on leads due to sheep.
Navigation: The Pony Path is well waymarked, but carry a map (OS Explorer OL23).
Alternative routes:
- Minffordd Path — steep, spectacular, via Llyn Cau.
- Fox’s Path — steep scree; only for experienced walkers in good conditions.
