Wirksworth has many imposing stone buildings and intricate network of narrow lanes, yards and alleys rich in history and heritage, exemplified by old mills and the impressive medieval parish church.

Wirksworth's fortunes were based on lead mining (even as far back as Roman times), quarrying and textiles in the Industrial Revolution of the late 18th century onwards. Textile mills were first introduced by the industrial pioneer Sir Richard Arkwright at Haarlem Mill, considered by some 'experts' to be the mill in George Eliot's novel The Mill on the Floss

The Parish Church of St Mary, Wirksworth

It is a grade I listed building and much of it dates from the 13th century.

This is the site of a former cruck truss cottage or house, the residual A frame of the cruck construction probably dates from the late medieval period/
