16. Walking on the banks of the River Derwent north via Westow and south from Kirkham Priory

The York - Scarborough railway line runs through Kirkham Priory, but no station!

Walking North

You can walk up the road out of Kirkham Priory and then descend down through farmland and fields to the River Derwent and walk along the bank to Jeffry Bog nature reserve - and believe me, this is well named!

You can head back towards Kirkham Priory passing Westow St Mary's Church - a fine looking building with a nave, chancel and Perpendicular west tower.

From the church you can head up to Westow Village and passing a playground and picnic area en-route.

The Blacksmiths Inn - it does exactly what it says on the can! Westow Village, south of Malton, Howardian Hills, North Yorkshire, England: The Blacksmiths Inn, is 'The Village Pub' for the village of Westow, south of Malton and east of the River Derwent. It is a Grade II listed building and a 'freehouse' offering good food and beers. The village of Westow has many old stone cottages (pictures below) as well as other more modern buildings and Westow Hall (left picture) is a particularly fine 18th century house and a building fit to grace any village in 'God's Own County' of Yorkshire!

Then its back across more fields before joining the road down into Kirkham Priory.
