Christ Church in Clifden, Connemara, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. The original church on the site was built in 1810 but ceased to exist by the mid-19th century. The current church was constructed in two phases between 1853 and 1864, designed by architect Joseph Welland.

The church suffered significant damage during a storm on November 21, 1881, which lifted its roof off entirely. It was later restored, but another disaster struck in 1961 when Hurricane Debbie caused extensive destruction. As a result, the nave was reduced in size, and a new west gable was constructed.

Today, Christ Church remains an important landmark in Clifden, reflecting the resilience of the local community and its historical significance. Would you like to know more details about its architecture or notable events?

St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Clifden, Connemara, was built in 1879 and underwent renovations in 1901, during which stained glass windows were installed.

These windows were crafted by Joshua Clarke, a renowned stained glass artist. The church was further beautified over the years, with significant contributions from Canon Mc Alpine between 1898 and 1932.

The stained glass windows contain the names of donors who contributed to the church, and a schematic diagram of the church shows where these names can be found.

On the opposite side of the road there is a graveyard of many of the victims of the Great Famine.

In the centre of the graveyard are the ruins of the first Roman Catholic chapel of 1820 to 1879.

St Joseph's is a fine building which I hope my humble photographs do justice to.

Some of the stained glass windows are the work of the Joshus Clarke studio (father of his more famous son Harry Clarke), one of Ireland's greatest stain glass window artists.
