A tombolo is a band of sand or shingle (a type of isthmus, spit or bar) separating an 'island' from the mainland.

Gurteen Bay Beach, located in County Galway, Ireland, is a breathtaking coastal gem famous for its soft white sands and crystal-clear waters. Nestled near Roundstone village, this tranquil beach offers stunning views of the Atlantic and is perfect for relaxing walks, swimming, and photography.

One of its unique features is that it shares a tombolo with Dog's Bay Beach, meaning the two beaches are back-to-back, separated only by a narrow strip of dunes. Unlike most sandy beaches, Gurteen Bay’s sand is made of tiny fragments of seashells, giving it a distinctive white appearance.

The surrounding landscape is wild and unspoiled, with rolling hills and rocky outcrops adding to its charm. While the area is remote and peaceful, it can get busy during the summer months. There are no lifeguards, so caution is advised when swimming.

Gurteen Bay and beach is a special area of conservation and the sand dunes in particular need protecting so PLEASE stick to the designated path.
