Ennis is the largest town in County Clare in the mid-west
of Ireland and an important market town.

1874 (completion of tower and spire), achieving Cathedral status in

The
Franciscan Friary Church, Ennis
Before exploring the Franciscan Friary churches we had a
good lunch in the Sweet 'N' Green healthy cafe (Friary car park,
Clonroad Beg), Ennis, before crossing and down the road to the
Franciscan Friary Church of Ennis.

The ruined
medieval church of Ennis Friary (Ennis Priory)
The medieval Ennis Friary was established in the 13th century for the
Franciscan order of monks.
The medieval Ennis Friary was founded by the O’Briens of
Thomond, who once ruled much of north Munster.
Ennis Friary grew quickly into a large foundation, with
350 friars and a famous school of 600 pupils by 1375 and the Friary
School was the last school of Catholic theology to survive the
Reformation.
The ruins of Ennis Friary contain a variety of fine fifteenth- and
sixteenth-century sculptures carved in the local hard limestone,
including one of St Francis himself displaying the stigmata.
An arch between the nave and transept bears a remarkable
image of Christ with his hands bound.

Left: High up on the wall of the ruined medieval Ennis Friary, is an effigy
of a King in Ennis Friary. It sits under an arch opposite an effigy of a
bishop on the other side of the arch and dated to around 1450-1470
