Carrigaholt is the largest village on the Loop Head Peninsula is noted for its seafood restaurants, fishing boat harbour, piers and protective breakwater, cliffs and small beach, the ruins of the 15th century Carrigaholt Castle that protected the mouth of the River Shannon.

The impressive ruined building of Carrigaholt Castle

Carrigaholt Castle was built in about 1480 by the McMahons, chiefs of the Corcabascin Peninsula. The ruins stands at the end of a fishing pier overlooking the Shannon Estuary and the harbour. Carrigaholt Castle is a tall, well-preserved five storey tower house surrounded by a bawn (walled courtyard). Carrigaholt Castle contains murder holes and a bartizan. Amazingly, a spiral staircase still leads to the top of the castle where there was a stone vaulted roof.

The Burton family were the last to live in the Carrigaholt Castle until the late 19th century.
