You follow the road north up Main Street, Newport, and on to Mulranny Road where you pick up the Green Western Greenway.

The Burrishoole Loop Walk trail partly follows the old track bed of the ? Railway and takes to you to a minor road and on to Burrishoole Abbey.

Burrishoole Abbey (Burrishoole Friary) is the halfway point on the Burrishoole Loop Walk and is attractively set on an estuary on Clew Bay.

Burrishoole Abbey was founded in 1469-1470 by Richard de Burgo of Turlough and despite the reformation and persecution, a community of monks survived to 1800.

The  Burrishoole Friary church and eastern wall comprise most of what survives today.

We actually returned to the old railway track bed via the shoreline until we found a minor road back to the main road on the Burrishoole Loop Walk.

Burrishoole Abbey is found in a very quiet scenic setting well away from the busy coastal road north from Newport.
