Newport is small busy heritage town set on the banks of Blackoak River, which flows out into Clew Bay, also on the route of the Great Western Greenway, in Co. Mayo, in the beautiful west of Ireland.

The Black Oak River is shown on some maps as the Newport River.

The Blackoak River, main road bridge onto Main Street, the old railway bridge and above them all is St Patrick's Church.

The old splendid sandstone  seven-arch railway bridge over the Blackoak River is the iconic image of Newport and forms part of the walk-ways around Newport.

We very much are week staying in Newport.

Approaching Newport from the north you are greeted by two murals depicting the history and culture of Newport,

The Port Chipper and the award winning Grainne Uaile pub (gastropub), near each other on Meddicott Street, Newport.

An old anchor and a plaque commemorating Marine Sergeant Major Juan King born in Newport in 1800 (died 1857). He had a distinguished career in the Argentine Nay from 1826 to 1852 and a compatriot of Admiral William Brown, founder of the Argentine Navy.

The block of residential and holiday apartments on Melcombe Road, we stayed in by Newport Harbour, with stunning sunset views in the evening.

Some old dilapidated fishing boats add a bit of extra character to Newport Harbour.

On Meddicott Street, Newport, near the main road bridge over the Blackoak River, stands the memorial to Edward (Ned) Lyons (Eamonn Ó Laighin in Irish), The Newport Commander of the IRA whose was captured and tortured by the British Army in 1920.

A phoenix red coloured old VW beetle LIC 269, first registered in 1976, owned by the Joyce family, parked up on Meddicott Street, Newport, Co. Mayo.
