The sign of the Wild Atlantic Way and parking by
Timoleague Friary, for the start of the walk to Courmacsherry.
The Timoleague to Courtmacsherry
walk follows the route of the narrow gauge railway alongside the estuary
which opened in 1891 but closed to all traffic in 1961. Throughout its
history the line carried local people, tourists, fish and farm produce.
The R601 road sweeps by the Friary, from where you
can see the start of the walk.
There are huge flocks of wader birds on the mudflats
near the start of the Timoleague to Courtmacsherry walk.
A railway signal in memory of the Timoleague to
Courtmacsherry railway (information below) starts the walk - the stone
flags are where the railway tracks were laid.
The golden plover and curlew can be seen on the
Timoleague to Courtmacsherry walk.
Lots of waders and gulls on the estuary - Timoleague
to Courtmacsherry walk.
Looking across to Timoleague with the friary ruins
and the mouth of the Argideen River beyond the gulls - hard to imagine
this was once the site of a busy port.
The redshank and black-tailed godwit are regular
sightings for those on the Timoleague to Courtmacsherry walk.

The lapwing and grey heron frequent Courmacsherry Bay
on the Timoleague to Courtmacsherry walk.
The Courtmacsherry Estuary is now designated a site
of special scientific interest and is the last part of the Argideen
Valley Trail.
The peregrine falcon, merlin and red-breasted
merganser are some of the rarer birds seen on the Timoleague to
Courtmacsherry walk.
Looking back to Timoleague
Widgeon, teal and shelduck ducks can be seen on the
Timoleague to Courtmacsherry walk.
The walk is part of the West Cork Coastal Route as
well as the Wild Atlantic Way.
Huge expanses of mudflats, good for bird watching
with a wide variety of ducks and waders.
The ruins of the Cistercian abbey of Abbeymahon on
the side of the R601 road.
A brief history of the Cistercian abbey of Abbeymahon:
Abbeymahon was set up by the Cistercian monks in the
townland of Cregane in 1278, where the new monastery became known as
Abbeymahon. The Cistercian monks highly valued the merits of manual
labour and made great improvements in reclaiming land and agricultural
developments. The monks motto was 'laborare est orare' meaning
'to work is to pray'. The abbey was suppressed in 1537 by King Henry
VIII (sorry about that, I'm very impressed with the 'organic'
agricultural achievements of these Cistercian monks - we need them
today!!!)
A few windows and gateways survive of Abbeymahon and
a lone tall fragment looking a bit forlorn.
