Prehistoric Mesolithic site at Lough Boora Discovery Park — archaeological summary

The Lough Boora Mesolithic site is a lakeshore hunter‑gatherer occupation discovered in 1977 during peatland works; subsequent investigations revealed charcoal hearths and a large assemblage of flint‑like chert tools showing repeated short‑term camps dating to the early to mid‑Mesolithic (c. 6500 BC).

Landscape and palaeoenvironment

The site occupies the former shoreline of a vast post‑glacial lake that once extended across the Midlands, a landscape of open water, wetlands and wooded shores exploited by Mesolithic people for fish, waterfowl and hazelnuts. The preservation of a storm‑beach shoreline and associated organic residues (charcoal) provides direct evidence for campfires and lakeshore activity in a landscape that is now reclaimed peatland.
