Absolutely stunning scenery in the Connemara National Park.

The Connemara National Park Centre is described below, followed by a circular walk up and around Diamond Mountain.

Connemara National Park, located in County Galway, Ireland, spans around 2,000 hectares of breathtaking landscapes, including mountains, bogs, heaths, and woodlands. The park was officially opened to the public in 1980, and its lands were previously part of the Kylemore Abbey Estate and the Letterfrack Industrial School.

Visitor Centre & Facilities

The Visitor Centre, situated in Letterfrack, serves as a great starting point for exploring the park. It features exhibitions showcasing the park’s natural beauty, wildlife, and conservation efforts. Other facilities include:

• A cafe

• Picnic areas

• Nature trails

• Audio-visual presentations

• Information on the archaeology, geology and the social history of the Connemara region.

• Guided walks and illustrated talks during the summer

Exhibitions & Tourist Guidance

The Visitor Centre provides photographic displays of Connemara’s stunning scenery and an audio-visual show about the park’s history and biodiversity. There are also self-guided trails, including the Tree Trail, which helps visitors discover the various tree species in the park.

For those looking for adventure, the Diamond Hill walking trails offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The park also hosts seasonal events, such as Connemara Bog Week, which celebrates the region’s unique ecosystem through guided walks, music, and workshops.

Then the walk up Diamond Mountain

Diamond Hill in Connemara National Park is a fantastic hike with breathtaking views! There are two main trails:

• Lower Trail: A 2.8km loop that takes about 45 minutes. It has some modest climbs but is manageable for those with moderate fitness.

• Upper Trail: A 6km route that takes around 2 hours. This one is steeper and leads to the summit at 442m, offering panoramic views of Connemara including the Twelve Bens..

The hike starts at the Connemara National Park Visitor Centre in Letterfrack, where you'll find parking, a café, and other facilities.

The quartzite rock at the summit glistens in the sunlight, giving the hill its "diamond" name.

We took the red route up Diamond Mountain.
