To do a linear walk,
but return by the same route gives you the maximum of sea views!

Looking towards the point of Sandsend Ness.

The coast nearer Sandsend Ness, you walk
from what was Sandsend station along the bed old the old coastal railway
track.

Just inland from the old railway embankment
there are huge quarries from the alum mining operations.

You climb up onto the old railway line
embankment from the car park by the sea below the building
that was Sandsend Station. En route to Kettleness, the bed of the
disused railway track forms the first part of the walk, and you
clearly see the waste from the old industrial alum mine workings
where little grows. The trees bend inwards! and the old railway
tunnel looks forlorn and forgotten!

Sandsend Ness

At Kettle Ness point you see right across to
the village of Runswick Bay.

The site of some of the
coastal industrial workings at Kettleness where there was an alum works.

Looking south-east
from Kettleness down the
coast towards Whitby.

The old village station at
Kettleness.

On the return you notice
how the railway was carved through the 'hills of the cliffs' with Whitby
in the distance.

The bay of Sandsend Wyke.

Sandsend beach.

Looking across to Whitby
and you can just make out the Abbey.
