cliffs on the Sheep's Head Peninsular, West Cork, Ireland
Above left picture: The
iron bearing rock in Rosedale, North Yorkshire, England, was roasted in
huge ovens to reduce the weight transported by rail to the blast
furnaces of Teesside. The tracks were above and below the ovens whose
stone has turned red from the heat of the oven furnace. The geology of
the area allowed an ironstone industry to flourish for many years, but
nothing lasts forever!
