The Priory Church of St Mary, Lancaster, is situated next to the Castle above the town itself. It is likely that a place of Christian worship existed here well before the Normans arrived in the late 11th century.

The doorway at the west end appears to be of Saxon origin and St Mary's Church contains some sculptured stones from that period of English history.

The church is first mentioned in 1094. St Mary's Church suffered at the hands of raiding Scots several times in the 14th century, though fortunately much of the church architecture from that time survives!

Looking west through the choir, down the nave to the organ and west gallery. The choir stalls of st Mary's Church are beautifully carved and date from the 14th century.

An Anglo-Saxon carving and three images of the white stone statue of the Virgin and Child by Sean Williamson, commissioned in 1994 to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Priory.
