Location 00b: In Middlesbrough, across from the Town Hall in the square is a statue of John Vaughan (1799-1868) who was Mayor of Middlesbrough in 1855. It recognises his important contribution to the history of Middlesbrough. He discovered ironstone in the Cleveland Hills and was one of the founding fathers of the iron industry on Teesside. He was in a partnership that built one of the first iron works in Middlesbrough in 1840. On the base of the statue are four cast bronze plaques describing aspects of Middlesbrough's industrial heritage.
