7. Leeds (2) St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate

Scenes in West Yorkshire *  West Yorkshire Index

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: The parish church of Leeds was built in 1838-1841 after the medieval church of St Peter was pulled down. Sadly, the church is a bit isolated from the city centre, because the church was cut off from the old town in 1869 when the railway was built! However, it is a fine piece of Victorian architecture and well worth a visit.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: The external architectural detail viewed from the north west. The big tower is on the north side of the church and ornately designed with battlements and pinnacles. The church was built for Dean Cook, the vicar from 1837 to 1859.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: The external architecture viewed from the south-west. Architecturally the church is a mixture of Decorated and Perpendicular styles.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: The beautiful etched glass you pass under as you enter through the north door - detail below

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: The view east from the west gallery, down the nave to the choir, chancel and altar. The chancel and nave are of equal length with four bays to the east and west. The chancel and nave both have clerestories and the clerestory windows are high up in the tall north and south aisles.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: The east window, sanctuary and east end of the chancel.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: Details of the 15th century Continental Flemish stained glass panels above the altar in the east window, collected at some time in the 19th century.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: The magnificent arches at the crossing at the north and south transept. The tower is above the north transept.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: Looking west through the choir stalls to the nave and west window. To the left and right of the nave arches are the galleries, which go all the way round and so incorporating a west gallery - quite an architectural feature of the interior of the church.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: Some of the fine dark oak wood carving on the corner of the north gallery.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: Some of the beautiful stained glass windows in the south wall of the nave. The middle panel is St Peter, the patron saint of the church, this is the earliest glass and from the previous church.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: The 'arts and crafts' style window in the north-west corner of the church, just beyond the cafe.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: Above and below are detailed images of the three lower panels of the 'arts and crafts' style window.

St Peter's Parish Church, Kirkgate: The little cafe in the north aisle, details below of part of the stained glass window on the right - a nice atmospheric place for a snack and cup of coffee or tea!
