Wartime Weekend 2010: Just a few weeks after the Autumn Steam Gala is the Railway at War weekend, in autumnal mid-October with re-enactments of scenes from the Second World War. The crucial role of the railways in WWII was remembered in this NYMR 'RAILWAY IN WARTIME EVENT' over the autumn weekend of October 15th, 16th and 17th. For example, in 1944 the Railways played a major role in the preparations for D-Day utilising 24,000 trains to move military vehicles, foodstuffs, munitions and troops. The network of British Railways was subjected to 9000 German bombing raids and many railwaymen and women lost there lives whilst on duty and despite the attacks the railway system functioned efficiently throughout the war..

One of the vital roles played by Britain’s railways was the evacuation of civilians, particularly children, in what was called ‘Operation Pied Piper’. Launched on 1st September 1939, hundreds of thousands of children were moved from the big cities into the countryside, where they were looked after by host families in a much safer location i.e. well away from the German bomb attacks on Britain's principal towns and cities. Amazingly, from London, over 1,500 trains were used to evacuate 500,000 people in just four days.
