23. Newcastle-Gateshead area (5) Images of the Angel of the North
The Angel of the North is a striking and massive steel sculpture seen on the east side of the A1(M) motorway just south-west of Newcastle-Gateshead. I think its a great piece of modern art and its a good place to pause for a rest or picnic and there is good free car parking and a picnic area available. An inspirational sight and a break from the drudgery of motorway driving!
The ANGEL OF THE NORTH by Antony Gormley, is a steel sculpture whose structure is 66ft/30m high and takes the form of a human figure with giant wings - the angel connection.
Work began on the one £1,000,000 project in 1994 and the project was mostly funded the National Lottery.
The steel sculpture known as the ANGEL OF THE NORTH and is found just east of the A1(M) road near Newcastle-Gateshead in the Low Fell area of Tyneside and was completed in 1998.
Because its exposed location on the hillside, the Angel of the North sculpture has to withstand winds of over 100 mph (160 km/h) and 600 metric tonnes (661 tons) of concrete were put into the foundations which hold the sculpture to rock 20 metres (66 ft) below.
The wings of the Angel of the North are 178ft/54m across - quite a span!
The fabricated structure of the Angel of the North is made of Corten weather resistant steel and the body weighs 100 tonnes (110 old tons!) and each wing is 50 tonnes (55 tons). This steel alloy contains copper which forms a patina on the surface which weathers with age and is built to last 100 years!
Initially the Angel of the North caused some local controversy but it is now widely recognised as a real landmark of, and for, the North East of England with its great history and legacy of structural engineering.
