The Laing Art Gallery Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

WELL WORTH A VISIT, a really good compact gallery you can fully explore in a day AND note that the often slightly blurred photographs are hardly the real thing but I hope they will give you an appetite to visit the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The Laing Art Gallery has an impressive collection of art and sculpture and its exhibition programme brings famous names in historic, modern and contemporary art to Newcastle. The Laing Art Gallery has a regular programme of free events including gallery talks, family activities and artists’ events. The wide ranging art collection of the Laing Art Gallery includes landscapes by John Martin and sculpture by Henry Moore. The Laing Art Gallery hosts the 'Northern Spirit', a major new permanent exhibition celebrating the achievements of artists, manufacturers and makers from the North East of England and features internationally acclaimed art including work by 19th century painter John Martin, engraver and naturalist Thomas Bewick and the Beilby family of glass enamellers. The displays also showcase local people’s photographs, films and stories. The Laing Art Gallery has worked in partnership with the International Centre for Culture and Heritage Studies at Newcastle University to explore the relationships between art, identity and place.
