 MIDLANDS INDEX

Leicester University Botanic Garden is situated on Stoughton Drive South and further bounded by Knighton Grange Road, London Road and Glebe Road (the latter is convenient to park on). As the leaflet you can obtain (with guide map) states "A botanic garden is distinguished from all other types of garden or park by engaging in research and education". Botanic gardens with an academic role date from mid-16th century Italy where specialist gardens were developed by monks in monastic establishments. This wonderful and attractive botanic garden is great to walk around, bring children to introduce them to the many wonders of the plant world and further admire the many sculptures on display in the varied garden sections.

The gardens and arboretum of Leicester's Botanic Garden was founded in Oadby in 1921 with the assistance of the Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society. In the grounds are four houses: Beaumont, Southmeade, The Knoll and Hastings, which were built early in the 20th century and are now used as student residences. The gardens consist of 16 acres of integrated cultivated grounds and greenhouses, displaying a wide variety of features and environments. The formal planting centres have been developed around a restored Edwardian garden. Other plant sections include an arboretum, herb garden, woodland and herbaceous borders, rock gardens, a water garden, special collections of Skimmia, Aubrieta, and hardy Fuchsia, and a series of glasshouses displaying temperate and tropical plants, alpines and succulents. The Botanic Garden also includes water features and sculptures add character and diversity to the garden settings. It's a great place for a pleasant walk and lots to look at for all ages!
