Welcome to the Great Central Railway's Leicester North Station and lots of steam trains to see in action and ride on. A great variety of steam locomotives on offer to view and plenty of steam hauled passenger and freight trains in action between Loughborough and Leicester calling in at the restored Rothley and Quorn & Woodhouse Stations.
Ex BR freight 2-8-0 48773 locomotive brings a train from Loughbrough into Leicester North Station.
The loco has to loop around to travel north with the return train to Loughborough. The above locomotive is actually Stanier 8F 2-8-0 number 48305 (was LMS 8305) built at Crewe Locomotive Works in 1943. It was repainted-renumbered as 48773 for a GCR gala event (to represent the last numbered in the class?). The real Class 8F heavy freight locomotive 48773 was built by the North British Locomotive Company, Glasgow, Scotland in 1940. 48773 was ex LMS 8233, ex WD 307 and served overseas in the War Department and became Persian Railways 41.109. Its WD number was 70307 in 1944vand 500 in 1952.
You can dine in style on the GCR.

Class O4 2-8-0 ex GCR/LNER/BR Robinson designed Class heavy freight locomotive 63601 emerging from Loughborough Locomotive Depot. 63601 (LNER numbered 5102, 3509 or 3601, GCR 102) was built at Gorton Locomotive Works, Manchester in 1911, so its nearly 100 years old and going strong on the GCR, its original railway company!
A few more 'portraits' of 63601.
Beyond the sheds-workshops is the bridge (or rather part of it) that goes over the canal ...
... hopefully the link to the northern section of the GCR line can be made to 18 miles of mainline double-track.

This little saddle-tank engine reminds me of 'Thomas the tank engine' and is one of two parked up near Quorn and Woodhouse station. Its denoted as locomotive No 630 built in 1903 at the Hudswell Clarke & Co. Ltd. in Leeds.
Another saddle-tank engine and I have no information on it.
