22. LONDON -Tate Modern Art Gallery

Cameo Snapshot Images of the City of London

 London Index

The Tate Modern art gallery is housed in the once disused Bankside Power Station on the banks of the River Thames in London. The great Turbine Hall lies at the heart of original building (designed by architect Giles Gilbert Scott) and the architects Herzog & de Meuron were tasked with turning the building into Tate Modern but to retain its original character. The Turbine Hall, that once housed the electricity generators of the old power station, has been converted into a social space for people. The Turbine Hall measures an impressive 35 metres high and 152 metres long creating a vast and dramatic entrance area with ramped access, as well as a display space for very large sculptural projects and installation art. Parallel to the Turbine Hall was the boiler house, which now houses the galleries that run the full length of the building, with various vantage points that allow you to look down into the vast space of the Turbine Hall.
