Just south from the river in Clink Street are the ruins of Winchester Palace, in medieval and through to the 17th century, a great and important palace of the powerful Bishops of Winchester. It was founded in the 12th century by Bishop Henry de Blois, brother of King Stephen and used for a 'luxury' stay in London, combined with administrative business.

On the south bank of the Thames, between the Cannon Street railway bridge and London Bridge is a replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship the 'Golden Hind' by Pickford's Wharf (SE 1)
